The Priory Church of the Annunciation, St Mary’s Hill
The Roman Catholic Priory Church was built by William Leigh to compliment the building of Woodchester Mansion. The Priory and the Church were completed whilst the Mansion never was. The Leigh family are buried in the Crypt and several notable persons are buried in the graveyard. A full history of the Church can be found on the Woodchester Mansion website.
In the 1960’s the Priory itself was demolished leaving only the Church. 2009 also saw the last Dominican priest to hold the position of Parish Priest when Fr Piers Linley retired to become chaplain to the convent of Dominican Sisters in Bushey, Hertfordshire. We are very fortunate that Fr Bill Watson, Parish Priest of St Joseph’s Stonehouse was able to take on the responsibilities for Woodchester, as well as continuing to serve Stonehouse. The Parish also includes St Dominic’s Catholic School (www.st-dominics.gloucs.sch.uk).
The Sunday Services at the Priory Church is at 11.00 and is normally a sung Mass. Other Service times are posted in the Church porch.
